Restoring a historic Stockport shopfront
In partnership with Lowry Capital, BTP has successfully delivered the restoration and refurbishment of a vacant three-storey building within the Hillgate Conservation Area of Stockport Town Centre.
The residential-led mixed-use development comprises seven spacious one-bedroom apartments and two ground floor commercial units.
Ensuring the longevity and safety of the building, which had fallen into disrepair, required extensive internal refurbishment and structural remedial works. With this as a foundation, our design retains as many original features as possible to preserve the distinctive character of the local area, while creating modern, functional living and commercial spaces.
Led by our in-house conservation expert, the design team used historic photographs of the front façade to inform a sensitive restoration to its original proportions, reinstating lost Victorian detailing with materials guided by those visible in the images.
The new apartments are arranged to take advantage of the building’s authentic features including high ceilings, trusses and beams to create open-plan living, dining and kitchen areas. The introduction of large skylights to the rear allows natural daylight to brighten the living spaces without visually compromising the front façade.
