Opening of new sustainable housing for the elderly in Ancoats
BTP were appointed by almshouse charity, the Edward Mayes Trust, to design four new apartments and landscaping for the elderly at its Mayes Gardens estate in Ancoats. The new two-storey building was officially opened by Manchester Central MP, Lucy Powell and we were pleased to attend along with project managers, Saffer Cooper Consultancy and lead contractors D J Hughes Construction Ltd.
“We were delighted to be asked once again to design one of the Mayes Gardens residences,” said David James, Architect at BTP. “The building has drawn from the original bungalows and flats on the estate to incorporate quirky design features and to also create a smaller version of the landscaped quadrangle on a seemingly unpromising brownfield site. This has enabled the building to fit seamlessly within the estate. The apartments use a building fabric which aims to reduce energy bills for those living in them.”
Paul Harrison, Director of Mayes Gardens said: “The Gardens are truly an oasis in Ancoats, with the new apartments at 25a blending in perfectly with the rest of the Mayes Gardens estate. Residents really enjoy living in such attractive communal surroundings where they have freedom to live as they please in a safe and secure environment.”
