In the Spotlight - Interview with Manny Atkinson

What is your role at BTP?

My role is certainly varied. My projects cover all of the RIBA work stages from feasibility studies, planning applications and working drawing packages through to job running and contract administration. I specialise in sustainability and have gained accreditation as a Code for Sustainable Homes and Energy Assessor. Since my promotion to Associate last year, I have focused on driving the BIM development of the practice.

How has joining BTP advanced your career?

I joined BTP as a Part I student with no practical experience and received excellent support during my first year in professional practice. I was then given the opportunity to continue working for BTP whilst studying for my Masters Degree part-time. I was very interested in sustainability and chose to train as an Energy and Code Assessor. This has helped me to develop into a well-rounded, confident professional.

What has been your favourite project at BTP?

I think my favourite project has been the new build Quaker Meeting House in Stockport, which is due for completion on site in early April. It has been a great experience to work very closely with both the client and contractor in advanced role and to carry out contract administration duties.

What advice do you have for prospective candidates?

My advice would be to do your ‘homework’ about architectural practices before applying to them. The key to a great experience in architecture is to be passionate about what you are working on, so it is important to apply to those practices that represent your interests and share your values.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?

One of my main passions is Formula 1 racing. I attend the Silverstone Grand Prix every year as well as at least one race at a venue/country I haven't visited before. This year I have already been to Barcelona to the Pre-Season Testing as Guest of Sahara Force India and will be going to Canada later this year.
