In the Spotlight - Interview with Lee Podmore

What is your role at BTP?

My role within the company is that of a Senior Quantity Surveyor.  However I am also a Chartered Architectural Technologist and coupled with over 18 years of on site experience am able to project manage jobs throughout all stages of the RIBA Plan of Works.

What drew you to BTP in the first place and how has it advanced your career?

Having started my career at one of the oldest established Architects in Manchester (Thomas Worthington & Sons) back in the midst of time, I then worked at my families firm of Contractors. One of the things I found whilst contracting and working with BTP, was their attention to detail.  This is something which is sadly not given by a lot of consultants!

As my father is a QS he taught me how to take off and price in order to win work for the company.  Whilst I was working at Bletchbrook Builders I went to Salford University to gain my degree in Quantity Surveying.  I had done the odd project for BTP whilst working at Bletchbrooks and was delighted when the Directors asked me if I would consider working for them on a permanent basis.  I completed my degree whilst at BTP and being here also helped me to achieve Chartered status with CIAT.

What has been your favourite project at BTP?

I have worked on numerous projects which have all been enjoyable.  From Mortgage Rescue, where I saw the positive effect this programme had on people from the stress on their lives from the thought that they could lose their home, to the release of this stress when the surveys I had done on the properties were actioned and the house bought by an RP.  However my most rewarding project to date has been working on the DIY SOS Veterans Special for the BBC.  This project on Canada Street in North Manchester took a number of Empty properties and converted them for use by wounded ex-service personnel.  It was great to work with so many different people all working for a worthy cause (and I got to meet Prince William and Harry!)

What advice do you have for prospective candidates?

Be flexible as no two projects are the same and listen to the advice from others.  No one knows everything and what you learn in University is completely different to real life!

If you weren’t a Quantity Surveyor, what would you be?

It was always my dream to be a pilot in the RAF and if it wasn’t for my rubbish eyesight my career would have taken a completely different path

What might someone be surprised to know about you?

I have a secret past as a singer with choir called ‘Sing Live’ and performed a couple of times at Bridgewater Hall.  We sang hits from the movies and other popular type of ditties!
