In the spotlight: interview with Jess Ward
What is your role at BTP?
Since joining BTP in June 2021 as a Part II architectural assistant, I have assisted in a variety of projects, such as high-rise refurbishments, residential feasibility studies and conservation work.
What drew you to join the practice?
Prior to working at BTP I had very little practical experience which is something I was keen to get moving into my Part 2/3. After speaking with the Directors at my interview, I was confident that BTP would be the place to give me the tools to develop my practical, personable, and technical skills. Working with a team of varying strengths means that there is always an opportunity to learn!
What has been your favourite project at BTP?
My favourite project at BTP has been Chartist House, which was also the first I was assigned to. The project comprises the refurbishment of a 16-storey tower block in Hyde and have been involved from Stage 1 (Preparation/Brief) to Stage 5 (Construction) of the RIBA Plan of Work.
More recently I have enjoyed working on Leigh Spinners Mill Two, which involves the repair and remodelling of a Grade II listed historic mill complex, where I have the chance to work alongside and learn from experienced conservation architect, Adrian Pearson.
If you weren’t an Architect, what would you do?
I think I would still work in a creative field, perhaps as a baker or a yoga teacher.
What might someone be surprised to know about you?
You may be surprised to know that I love sports! I have previously competed in triathlons and active charity events; last year my family and I completed Manchester 10K run and raised over £ 6,000 for Mind. More recently, I spent my time weight training, at hot yoga or dancing at Bongo's Bingo. I am also an advocate for ‘balance’ and when I’m not doing sports, I love baking cakes!
