Redevelopment of derelict block of bedsits into attractive apartments for 55+
BTP’s design has delivered 12 new affordable rented apartments for the over 55s on the site of a former derelict block of flats in the centre of Waterfoot.
As award-winning specialists in designs for older people, BTP was commissioned to lead the project for the Rossendale Together Barnfield Partnership, which is a regeneration development company set up by Rossendale Borough Council with Together Housing Group and Barnfield Construction.
The project involved the redevelopment of the former Mytholme House, a derelict block of 10 bedsits, which had been empty for more than 5 years. The site was extremely challenging due to its town centre location, its position next to a river, steep gradients and ground conditions. It had become a magnet for vandalism and petty crime, with nearby residents calling for its demolition.
BTP’s design delivers a three storey apartment block with four high quality apartments on each floor specific to the needs of the over 55s. It is a traditional build using bradstone material, chosen to be in keeping with the adjacent Grade II listed Victoria Parade. The new development is the result of close consultation with the people of Waterfoot and now provides much needed high quality rented accommodation and an economic boost to the town.
