Project Description

Development of 10-bed specialist nursing home with staff and communal accommodation

We were appointed as architects to design a new 10-bed nursing home for those with enduring and severe mental health needs to include staff accommodation and communal areas. The building is designed to be domestic in its character and to fit unobtrusively within a residential environment. Each resident's bedroom has en-suite facilities, and one bedroom at ground level is wheelchair accessible.

The scheme has numerous 'social' areas to allow for a range of activities/contact; including two lounges, a craft room, dining room, conservatory, laundry and central foyer.

The building has several nursing home features, which will be useful in the long term in catering for a range of dependency levels.

Key Features

  • Establishing a clear Client Brief. This was particularly important as the development was one of the first of its kind.
  • Allowing freedom of resident movement/containment.
  • Providing hygiene/durability.
  • Offering homely environment.
  • Promoting personal dignity/safety.
  • Identifying risks to the project, innovating and mitigating risks. For example, the ground conditions were poor, as the site was very near the beach, so piles were used.
  • Establishing pragmatic, sustainable and solutions focused fire strategy for the core and cluster model. This led to developing a new fire strategy concept for this type of building.
  • Delivering less carbon emissions and waste. Care homes in the past have not been 'green' buildings and have been expensive to heat.
  • Supporting the local authority to realise the benefits of quality residential care.
  • Providing low maintenance and life cycle costs.
  • BTP delivered the service on time and on budget. We successfully value engineered all aspects of the design to make sure it remained solutions focused.
