Elizabeth Gaskell’s House Restored to Former Glory
We were delighted to attend the recent re-opening of Elizabeth Gaskell’s House, the former home of one of Manchester’s most illustrious Victorian authors. The practice was appointed by Manchester Historic Buildings Trust as lead architects for this restoration work with both Mather and Ellis and Armitage Construction as the main contractors and we are delighted to list this project amongst our conservation portfolio.
The Grade II* Listed property, which dates from the 1830s, had suffered from structural disrepair and neglect, and found itself on the English Heritage’s register of buildings at risk. The focus and combination of the Trust’s vision and BTP’s design was to ensure a long-term viable use for the house by making it fully accessible to the public, whilst preserving its architectural heritage. BTP worked on the project for seven years through three phases of work to support the Manchester Historic Buildings Trust’s ambition to return the house to a centre focusing on the life and works of the author and thereby securing its long-term future.
