Project Description

Repairs and renovations to Grade II listed Quaker meeting house

The meeting house is located close to Albert Square in the centre of Manchester and is an historic landmark. The house is built in a classical style and is a notable building as it was designed by Richard Lane, a leading Architect of the period. Despite numerous alterations internally, the building has well preserved elevations and external features. The building is Grade II and was built in 1829.

We were appointed as lead consultant for several phases of work:

  • Phase 1 ‐ in 1994 consisted of remedial treatments to the roof structure.
  • Phase 2 ‐ in 1999 consisted of improvement works to the main concourse and conversion of ground floor rooms into a Conference Suite.
  • Phase 3 ‐ in 2003 concerned external works to the main frontage and consisted of the reinstating of railings and stone pillars to the boundary and a disabled access ramp.
  • Phase 4 ‐ in 2013/14 consisted of a major renovation of the first floor offices into a new Conference Suite and the provision of a new passenger lift to serve all floors of the building.
  • We have carried out a number of Quinquennial Surveys over the years and are currently looking into options for the conversion of the extensive basement area into a facility for the homeless.

Key Features

  • Providing access for all in the context of the listed building, both externally with a new ramp and internally with a new lift.
  • Opening up of existing roof lights and lay lights to create a central atrium over the first floor concourse.
  • New oak staircase and glass balustrade connecting ground to first floor Conference Suites.
